Dermatology Residency
Meet Residency Program Director Dr. Adam Berry
Read why Dr. Adam Berry, residency program director and former SIU resident, thinks SIU Dermatology is a "true gem" and how the program will help residents like you achieve your full potential.
About Us
From the beginning, resident education has been the heart of SIU Dermatology. Our dermatologists are enthusiastic teachers and learners, and we endeavor to provide our residents with excellent and enjoyable training in medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and dermatopathology. Responsibility and autonomy are advanced according to the abilities of the learner, such that residents are well-prepared for independent practice upon completion of the program. We pride ourselves on a collegial and supportive environment and continually strive to treat our patients with the same attention and respect that we would desire for our own families.
Program Mission
The mission of the Division of Dermatology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is to recruit a diverse and inclusive workforce and train dermatology residents to be excellent clinicians and surgeons in the dermatologic care of adult and pediatric patients. This mission will be achieved through robust education, scholarly pursuit and service to the patients of Central and Southern Illinois. In doing so, we will provide culturally responsive and equitable medical and surgical care for general skin health as well as diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes.
Program Goals
The SIU Dermatology Residency Program adopts the goal set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, as defined in the Dermatology Program Requirements:
Provide residents with the educational and practical experience that will enable them to deliver superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes.
This goal will be attained by mastering the competency-based objectives outlined below.
- The resident must understand the basic anatomy, physiology and molecular biology of the skin, its appendages, and related organ systems, in order to accurately diagnose and appropriately manage conditions that affect these systems.
- In order to provide excellent care that is responsible, effective, and compassionate, curricular knowledge and clinical competence in the areas of general dermatology, dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery, must be achieved and demonstrated.
- The resident should develop and maintain habits of scholarly inquiry and discovery to ensure life-long learning and professional development. Acquiring and mastering these skills will occur by learning to evaluate past and current research findings, participating in the development of novel discovery, then applying this knowledge in a clinically appropriate manner. Scholarly participation includes the sharing of knowledge and engaging in the teaching of peers, students, patients, and the general public.
- The resident should demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, cultural responsiveness and a sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
- The resident should be receptive to constructive feedback and be able to investigate, evaluate and improve their patient care practices.
- During the course of their training, the resident should also develop an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context of the health care system and be able to effectively call on system resources to advocate for patients and provide optimal care that is holistic and multidisciplinary in nature.
The Division of Dermatology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is committed to increasing diversity and inclusion in dermatology, decreasing healthcare disparities and improving health equity for our community and beyond. We acknowledge that workforce and healthcare inequity is harmful for patients and is unacceptable. We commit to approaching workforce recruitment, trainee education, and patient care with an intentional and culturally responsive focus on diversity and inclusion and through an equity lens. We unequivocally acknowledge the importance of increasing equity in our specialty and within healthcare and place the highest value on creating and supporting policies and protocols that will advance health and healthcare equity, with the understanding that accompanying change must happen gradually and steadily.
We, the faculty of SIU Dermatoogy, are committed to the professional development and growth of the members of our division and residency program. We recognize that workplace culture and safety impact wellbeing in a holistic manner and that professional success is contingent upon this wellbeing. We will not tolerate acts, language and behavior, whether verbal, nonverbal, physical or sexual in nature, that are hateful, harmful or discriminatory. We commit ourselves to receiving reports of these events, pledge to take the necessary action steps to follow up on reported events and support the affected individuals, and continually examine our clinical and educational environments for ways to mitigate future harm.
