Hematology / Oncology

Welcome

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship is a 3-year program within the Simmons Cancer Institute at the SIU School of Medicine.  We are an ACGME accredited program for a maximum of nine fellows and accept three fellows each academic year.

Simmons Cancer Institute Hematology/Oncology is dedicated to supporting our patients through their cancer journey. At SCI Hematology/Oncology, we practice the “team approach” to cancer care. This means that our patients’ cancer treatment plans are formed collectively by our team of oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, counselors, and chemotherapy-certified medical staff. These plans are individualized to each patient. The multidisciplinary team approach to patient treatment provides a higher quality of care for both the patient and their families.

Goals of the Program

The primary goals of a Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship program are twofold: to train fellows who have a strong desire and aptitude for an academic career involving basic science or clinical/translational research, teaching and patient care; and to train outstanding clinical Hematologists and Medical Oncologists to take care of patients in the community with solid and hematologic cancers as well as non-malignant blood diseases.
