Eligibility: Medical students, residents, and clinical fellows are invited to submit abstracts for presentation at the 2020 Trainee Research Symposium. Scholarly activities eligible for consideration include all Original Research (hypothesis-driven discovery/translational/clinical studies) as well as clinically significant Case Vignettes (case reports).  Quality improvement projects are NOT eligible.

Presenting trainees must be first author and the work must have been conducted under the guidance of SIU faculty member(s).  Only one abstract AS FIRST AUTHOR may be submitted per trainee.  The faculty mentor must approve the submitted abstract, including authorship.  MPEE projects are eligible if the project meets the other criteria.

Symposium Format:  All abstracts will be eligible for oral presentation and will be competitively selected by a screening committee in advance.  Oral presentations are limited to 15 minutes max (10 minute presentation; 5 minutes for questions).  Abstracts not selected for oral presentation may be presented as posters.  Poster dimensions 4 feet x 6 feet, landscape orientation.  Please note: depending on the number of abstracts submitted and time/space constraints, not all abstracts may be accepted.

Medical students and residents/fellows will compete in separate categories for first ($200), second ($100) and third ($50) place prizes, which will be announced shortly after conclusion of the oral presentations.  Entries will be evaluated based on the quality of the data; quality of the research design; presentation, creativity and originality of the project; and potential scientific or medical significance of the project.

Submission Requirements:

Cover Page: Please complete the cover page and provide it with the abstract.

Abstracts:  The abstract is limited to one page. Provide a succinct title, list all authors and their department affiliations.  Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word, 1” margins all around, Arial 11 font, with single spacing.

Due Date:  Email (student use "siumed.edu" email address only) cover page and abstracts by 4:00pm Wednesday, January 29, 2020 to Kristi Katcher (kkatcher@siumed.edu), Office of the Associate Dean for Research.

If you have any questions, please contact Kristi Katcher at 217/545-7936.  All accepted abstracts will be published in the Symposium 2020 proceedings booklet, which will be distributed the day of the symposium.
