Leadership Development Pathway

Vision: To significantly impact leadership development within undergraduate medical education (UME) by creating a feedback-intensive, evidence-based, transformational leadership development curriculum that can be implemented across-the-board in undergraduate medical education (UME), and that ultimately has a positive effect on the general well-being of our society.

Mission: To develop world-class physician leaders who embrace and effectively lead change to help transform and improve healthcare; who adopt a life-long, systematic habit of growth—intellectual, emotional, and social; who personally develop the next generation of leaders; and who enable others to achieve more than they might not think possible.

Core Values

  • Excellence: require the highest standards of ourselves, as an example to students; move beyond individual achievement and apply the science of leadership studies toward actionable leadership development processes in medical school such that patient and social outcomes are improved.
  • Innovation: think outside the limitations of current knowledge to determine new approaches and practices leadership development for medical students; offer a variety of rich and integrated developmental experiences that provide assessment, challenge, and support to students.
  • Collaboration: build and maintain meaningful inter-organizational relationships (“linkages”).
  • Simplicity: avoid leadership “fads” and focus on leveraging fundamental leadership development models and simplifying the best practices by distilling them into solutions that assist students in addressing critical leadership issues.
  • Alignment: make decisions based on strategic imperatives rather than on individual preferences and personalities of project team members currently on board; strive to develop people in a meaningful way that reflects the vision, direction, values, and performance competencies of SIU Medicine; build tools and processes that can eventually be used by all medical students (at SIU and beyond).
