Osteopathic Medicine Residents

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program-Carbondale is accredited by both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This program has an affiliation agreement with The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, for post-graduate medical education. This allows DO residents to receive certification by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.

DO residents are expected to utilize their osteopathic skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat patients in the clinics and hospital. The faculty of the OMM Department of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine are affiliates of the SIU Schoolof Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program. KCOM also appoints an Illinois regional dean to teach monthly hands-on OMM seminars with required reading assignments.

Fourth-year DO students must apply to our program using either the AMA or the AOA match, but we strongly encourage DO students to apply using the American Osteopathic Association Resident Match Program to ensure that they will be eligible for dual certification.
