Process for a Bloodborne Pathogen exposure

If you have a bloodborne pathogen exposure (needle-stick, cut, puncture wound, mucous membrane splash or skin exposure):

For exposures that occur at all locations except St. John's Hospital:
During work hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., immediately call the SIU Medicine Employee Health Nurse at: 217-545-8970  or Page at 217-492-2446 

After hours, on weekends or holidays call SIU Medicine answering service at 217-545-8000 and have them page the Infectious Disease doctor on call. Please notify the Employee Health Nurse the next working day. Documentation of the exposure will need to be completed with the assistance of the employee health nurse. 

The SIU Medicine Employee Health office is located on the 3rd floor of 201 East Madison in Springfield.
St. John’s Hospital Exposure procedure:

  • Call the St. John’s operator at 217-544-6464 and ask for Employee Health. If it is after 3:30, ask for the Nursing Supervisor.
  • The St. John’s Staff will facilitate blood testing on the source patient per SIU protocol.
  • The St. John’s staff will request your contact information so they can call the source patient’s lab results to you.

After you've spoken to St. John's employee health or nursing supervisor:
