Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine's Department of Family & Community Medicine directs the student Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and coordinates activities with the student representatives for each class. Students interested in family medicine and/or primary care are welcome to join FMIG to learn more about the philosophy and experiences in family medicine. Membership is free. Each year the FMIG holds a dinner to celebrate those matching into Family Medicine Residency Programs for that year. FMIG also sponsors many outreach programs such as Tar Wars and outreach to children that are homeless through The Matthew Project.

 

Activities include:

  • Procedural workshops
  • Interviewing and residency match informational sessions
  • Community oriented primary care programs (dental care, mother-baby health,etc.)
  • FMIG social functions
  • Student FMIG attendance at state, regional and national conferences sponsored by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to learn more about the opportunities that family medicine has to offer.
  • Opportunities to present research at state, regional, and national conferences

The FMIG was recognized in 1998 and 2013 as a Program of Excellence for activities, outreach, and education.
The program was named the AAFP Tar Wars 2013-2014 Outstanding Program.
