Springfield & Sherman Fire Departments Host SIUEM Fire Day

The 2nd Annual SIUEM Fire Day was held at the Sherman Fire Department April 6th 2017. Firefighters from the Springfield Fire Department Training Division instructed the residents and students on forced entry, confined space movements and the manipulation of equipment through a multistory training tower. Resident physicians presented topics on suspension syndrome, blast and crush injuries. The event allows our learners to better understand the environment and extremes that our patients and prehospital providers face when a structure fire occurs.

SIUEM Orthopedic Skills Day

SIU Emergency Medicine residents and medical students participated in an orthopedic skills lab today at the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI.) Springfield Clinic orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Gardner with the help of SIU orthopedic residents instructed learners on fracture reduction and proper splinting technique. A new addition to the training day was a simulated distal forearm fracture model. The residency program in Springfield is affiliated with two large community hospitals: Memorial Health and St John’s Hospital. Their patient populations are well-balanced, diverse and are drawn from Springfield and a large 30 county referral area. With a combined total of over 1,200 beds, both Memorial and St Johns are acute care centers with active Emergency Departments and Outpatient departments.
