Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Spoon River College will be offering a one-day Health Career Opportunities program on Tuesday, June 26, at Spoon River College in Canton. The event is free and open to high school students — incoming freshman through seniors — as well as seniors who recently graduated. Presentations will include information on careers in nursing, medicine, medical research and more, with numerous hands-on activities and some “soft skills” training. SIU Medicine Earns National Award for Patient Access, Referral Management

In May 2018, the Patient Access Collaborative, formerly the Patient Access Symposium, recognized SIU Medicine with the award "Best Practice in Patient Access for Referral Management." The Patient Access Collaborative, founded in 2011, provides a forum for large academic health systems to discuss solutions, disseminate ideas and collaborate as a collective group to improve patient access in a complex ambulatory enterprise. Simmons Cancer Institute to Host HPV Roundtable for Parents

Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine will host “The ABC’s of HPV” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21. The roundtable discussion will provide parents and guardians with an opportunity to discuss human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations with medical professionals from Southern Illinois University Medicine. Seventy-two physicians and one graduate student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received their diplomas on Saturday, May 19, in the Sangamon Auditorium at University of Illinois Springfield during the school’s 44 th commencement. This year’s commencement speaker was U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL). Durbin previously spoke at the 1995 commencement as a congressman, when he represented the 20th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also was a volunteer professor of medical humanities at SIU School of Medicine from 1986-97. His remarks touched upon
