Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training program at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is part of a combined General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) 5-year integrated program. Applicants will typically apply right out of medical school and commit to doing both general psychiatry and CAP at the same program. The first 3 years of the program will be mostly adult psychiatry with a few CAP rotations intermixed. During the internship year the experiences will be in pediatrics and family medicine. This type of program is often referred to as a “Child Track” program. At the end of the program the residents will be board eligible in both General Psychiatry and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Graduates are able to continue to treat adults if they wish, or solely focus on the child and adolescent population if they so desire.
There is a shortage of child psychiatrists throughout the country and especially in the rural areas. The mission of the medical school has always been to educate medical professionals to provide medical care to the population in central and southern Illinois. The Child Track training program will train child psychiatrists who are familiar with rural populations and comfortable working in a community setting.
We provide eclectic, well-rounded clinical experiences and didactics. This is a program that emphasizes personalized attention from the faculty. For those applicants looking to build an academic or teaching career, this is an ideal environment. The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is nationally known for its innovations in medical education. CAP track trainees will have multiple opportunities to participate in teaching and mentoring medical students and general psychiatry residents, as well as opportunities to present with faculty at local and national meetings, as well as to join research protocols.
Training in substance abuse and developmental disabilities are strengths of this program. Trainees will follow a core of patients for medication management and psychotherapy through their course of training. Through all of these experiences, one-to-one supervision and mentoring will be provided. Trainees will find that faculty are very accessible, supportive, and eager to nurture them in their chosen path.
