Student Education

Medical Students

Our physicians and all providers enjoy teaching. Our clinic providers bring an engaging experience for medical students to care for patients across the lifespan. The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program has Family Medicine faculty physicians that work with medical students during their second year in a longitudinal mentoring experience to offer wonderful continuity of education through care for similar patients. We also have students work with our faculty during rotations and electives throughout their third and fourth year and work closely with our staff to optimize the student experience.

Please contact, Tara South,  in the Department of Family and Community Medicine office. If you have additional questions, you can also contact clerkship director Chris Gleason, MD.

Physician Assistant Students

The SIU Physician Assistant (PA) Program collaborates with the SIU Department of Family Medicine to provide clinical training hub sites for PA students.  During Phase II (clinical rotations) of the PA program, students are assigned to hub sites where they spend the second year of their training in a variety of rotations.  They are also  assigned mentors who they work with weekly at Family Medicine.  Problem Based learning is continued for the students into phase II and facilitated by SIU Family Medicine PA’s.  Having this relationship between Family Medicine and the PA program enhances the students’ experience and exposure to primary care.

For questions, please contact Becky Hanna. To learn more visit the Physician Assistant Program page.
