Special Diversity Message from the Dean

November, 2016 Dear Colleagues and Friends, The most recent AAMC Mission Management Tool ranked the SIU School of Medicine at 93rd percentile among US medical schools for the percentage of African American graduates over the past five years. Regarding our faculty, the SIU SOM ranked at 88th percentile for the percentage who are women and at 48th percentile for the percentage from underrepresented groups in medicine. January 2017 Medical Students Working with Local Physicians

Family physicians in eight Illinois communities are hosting students from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine January 30 – February 27. The students are participating in the school’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program. The experience provides an opportunity for students to use their medical knowledge in an office setting under the supervision of an experienced physician. The students choose from more than 160 family practice physicians in Illinois for their preceptorship experience. They will graduate from medical school in May 2018, then pursue advanced training in a specific

Boot Camp

We are excited to introduce to you our Boot Camp Program that was started in 2012. This exciting, innovative program is put on for our interns in the first month of their residency. Here at SIU, we have residents who are from different medical schools, cultures, and even countries. Boot Camp was first proposed as a way to gauge each intern’s comfort level with different practical skills and knowledge of pediatric-specific topics. We then offer a program that prepares all interns to start their first clinical rotation confident in their skills, and well-aware of our expectations of them. We

However, medicine is a high-risk profession for development of stress, burnout and depression, especially for residents.
