Simmons Cancer Institute Accepting Summer Internship Applications

Summer research internships will be offered for the ninth year at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Medicine. SCI will award four paid positions to qualified undergraduate college students who plan a career in medicine or biomedical research with a focus on cancer. Diversity Lecture to Highlight Link Between Medical Education, Patient Health

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is hosting an inaugural lecture to commemorate the life of a groundbreaking central Illinois physician. The lecture is part of the Alonzo Homer Kenniebrew, MD Forum on Health Inequities and Disparities, a new annual discussion of health disparities and other factors that impact population health. The lecture is free and open to the public. Kendall Campb ell, MD, will deliver the keynote address from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31. His presentation, “Promoting Equity for Faculty in Academic Medicine,” will be held in the Memorial Center

Health Access Improves, Crime Down in Enos Park

January 16, 2017 — More than 100 Enos Park neighborhood residents had better access to health care, dental care, mental health care and other quality-of-life services, thanks to the Access to Care Collaborative, which celebrated its first year in October 2016. Enos Park, a vulnerable, low-income neighborhood, encompasses 36 square blocks of residential and business properties north of downtown Springfield. Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John’s Hospital are collaborating with SIU Center for Family Medicine to fund the three-year program, which was designed to help Enos Park neighborhood

SIU Med School Students Earn Scholarships

Twenty-five students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have been awarded scholarships over the past few weeks. Three fourth-year students received the Alumni Scholarship: Kyle McCullough , son of Michael and Gayle McCullough of Decatur; Jacquelyne Mool , daughter of Ken Mool of Panola and Kim Scott of Peoria; and Jasmine Moreno , daughter of Efren and Martha Moreno of Chicago. The Alumni Scholarship was established by the charter Class of 1976 as a gift in honor of its 25th reunion. The Class of 1977 followed the lead of its predecessor by supporting the fund with reunion
