Welcome to the Multidisciplinary Biomedical & Biological Sciences (MBBS) Graduate Program at Southern Illinois University, where your academic and research journey is designed to be as flexible and comprehensive as your ambitions. Whether you're aspiring to earn a Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, our program offers a unique opportunity to explore a variety of disciplines and tailor your education to your interests.
The flexible curriculum for MBBS students is designed to equip them with interdisciplinary knowledge, essential for success in today’s scientific landscape. Core courses in scientific communication, research fundamentals and ethical conduct are mandatory, while students have the freedom to choose electives relevant to their research interests. Some concentrations have specific required courses, with additional credit hours available from a wide range of electives across disciplines.
The Interdisciplinary Rotation option is perfect for high-achieving students eager to explore diverse research areas before committing to a Concentration. In their first semester, students will engage in three laboratory rotations, complete core courses in scientific communication and research fundamentals, and select 1-3 electives. By the second semester, they will declare their chosen Concentration.
The MBBS Graduate Program offers flexible MS and PhD degrees across eight areas of study, allowing students to customize their education through research and elective courses. With options for both thesis and non-thesis tracks, the program supports diverse career goals and provides financial assistance through assistantships and fellowships. The Interdisciplinary Rotation option allows students to explore multiple research areas before selecting a Concentration.
Our Concentrations offer advanced training via lecture, discussion and laboratory research and are led by faculty located on three campuses — Carbondale, Edwardsville and Springfield — in eight areas of study or Concentrations.
