The Department of Population Science and Policy strives to protect the most vulnerable of our populations by participating in programs and projects that focus on early childhood development and health. There are both in school and out of school factors that change the way that young students learn and their ability to focus. Some of these things include sleep, stress, housing, and asthma. Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University Medicine will host the 17th annual Denim & Diamonds fundraiser Saturday, October 14, at the Crowne Plaza Springfield. The event features live and silent auctions with many one-of-kind items, raffles, live entertainment and dinner. “Funds raised at the event are used for cancer research through our Team Science Grants,” said Aziz Khan, MD, executive director of SCI. SIU Medicine to Train New 'Hotspotters'

Students and faculty from some of the nation’s top higher education institutions will learn the art of “hotspotting” at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers selected the medical school as one of only four sites in the United States to lead and train, in partnership with the Camden faculty, some of the nation’s most respected educators on the hotspotting model of access to care. This program identifies hospital super-users and high-risk patients and promotes ways to give them better, more cost-effective medical care. SIU

Alzheimer's Caregivers Invited to Attend Free Training

Those who provide care to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia patients at home are invited to attend The Savvy Caregiver program, a free, six-week course. Beginning Oct. 2, classes will meet from 1 to 3 pm on Mondays, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Nov. 6, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield.
