Office for Clinical Research

The Institute for Plastic Surgery maintains its own Office for Clinical Research. This office supports the division’s efforts to conduct clinical studies and clinical trials initiated by an industry sponsor or by the division’s faculty. Ongoing studies include the following: Patients with Raynaud’s Syndrome Sought for SIU Clinical Trial Patients suffering with finger pain caused by Raynaud’s Syndrome are needed to participate in a clinical trial at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s Institute for Plastic Surgery. Current Research Projects

1. New Antimicrobial Agents to Eradicate Infection and Sterilize Burn Wounds The ability to utilize antimicrobial peptides for the prevention of burn wound infections may significantly reduce infection rates and thus, mortality in high-risk patients. We are measuring the ability of antimicrobial peptides to sterilize burn wounds in an animal model. Success in this experiment may justify further experiments in a clinical setting. The long-term goal is to use these compounds as a better alternative to topical antibiotics to eradicate microorganisms in burn wounds. 2. ADSC Transplantation

Mission

The long-term goal of the Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine and Applied Sciences is to develop a functional hybrid graft to heal full-thickness skin defects and explore the potential of epithelial-derived stem cells (LGR5+ and LGR6+) for burns, neuropathic ulcers, and hair regeneration. We are also exploring the potential of merging TRAIL (TNF-Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand) therapy with conventional breast reconstruction procedures to eliminate breast cancer recurrence after mastectomy.

Opioid Conference Offers Guidance For Health Care, Law Enforcement Professionals

The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic. Opioids (including prescription opioids and heroin) killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription pain reliever. More Illinoisans die from opioid drug overdoses than from motor vehicle accidents or all gun-related causes. An educational conference will address issues surrounding the opioid prescription drug and heroin epidemic, starting at 8:30 a.m. on June 6 at the Mount Vernon
