New treatment offers outpatient option for enlarged prostate

A new medical procedure is now available in central Illinois for treating a common male malady. Water vapor therapy can be done in an outpatient setting to treat Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. BPH is present in the majority of men over age 40, and more than 90 percent of men over age 80, according to the National Institutes of Health. It affects the frequency and ease of urination. January 2017 Medical Students Working with Local Physicians

Family physicians in eight Illinois communities are hosting students from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine January 30 – February 27. The students are participating in the school’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program. The experience provides an opportunity for students to use their medical knowledge in an office setting under the supervision of an experienced physician. The students choose from more than 160 family practice physicians in Illinois for their preceptorship experience. A new support group for adult brain tumor patients and their caregivers will begin meeting from 6 - 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The Brain Tumor Support Group is sponsored through the neuro-oncology program at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University Medicine. The group’s first meeting will be Thursday, February 2, at Memorial Medical Center, 701 N.1st St., Room B149. Health Access Improves, Crime Down in Enos Park

January 16, 2017 — More than 100 Enos Park neighborhood residents had better access to health care, dental care, mental health care and other quality-of-life services, thanks to the Access to Care Collaborative, which celebrated its first year in October 2016. Enos Park, a vulnerable, low-income neighborhood, encompasses 36 square blocks of residential and business properties north of downtown Springfield.
