SIU Surgeon to Lead National Surgery Board

Jan Rakinic, MD, FACS , SIU School of Medicine Professor of Surgery, has been named the president-elect for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS.) “To earn this recognition from a number of my peers, whom I have a lot of respect for, is really humbling,” says Rakinic, who joined SIU in 2001. She is the chief of the Section of Colorectal Surgery at SIU School of Medicine. SIU Pediatric Urologist Now Seeing Patients in Effingham

Children with specific urological conditions requiring surgery have a new option for care closer to home. Ranjiv Mathews, MD, has partnered with Effingham Urology Associates to bring specialized pediatric urological care to Effingham County. Mathews will see patients at 414 W. Virginia Ave. in Effingham. He is the only pediatric urologist in an 80-mile radius.

The students are participating in the school’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program.
