Outstanding Scholar Award Presented to Dr. Vickram Ramkumar

Vickram Ramkumar Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology, was awarded the Outstanding Scholar Award at the College Level of Southern Illinois University in 2019. Dr. Ramkumar joins the ranks of several other Pharmacology Department faculty who received Outstanding Scholar awards for excellence in both Research and Teaching in previous years.

A model for medical education

If SIU School of Medicine is known for one thing, it is innovation in medical education. At the time SIU School of Medicine was created, medical instruction was fundamentally lecture-based. Led by the Dean, Dr. Richard Moy, the SIU faculty chose a different tack, one that emphasized solving real-world health problems rather than memorizing facts. The model that evolved provided medical students with early exposure to patient care, and it demanded they master a subject before progressing to the next level of training. 2019 Pharmacology Awards

The School of Medicine's annual Pharmacology Awards were presented May 16 in the Pearson Museum, honoring a trio of scientists for excellence in academics, research and leadership in the lab. Dr. Satu Somani was one of the three original faculty members of the SIU School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and a dedicated scientist and educator. He loved teaching, often asking for more time to teach additional material he felt was important to the student’s medical education. May 14, 2019 — Young researchers at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine show great promise as they pursued answers to scientific queries during the 29th annual Trainee Research Symposium held recently at the medical school. The two-day symposium on April 23 and 26 offered trainees in Springfield and Carbondale an opportunity to gain experience in making formal presentations of their research findings. 29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium

On April 26, 2019 graduate and medical students from SIU-SOM traveled to SIU Carbondale to participate in the 29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium. Harvard Park Day @ SIU

On April 25 and 26, 3rd and 5th graders from Harvard Park Elementary School visited SIU and spent a wonderful “Harvard Park Day @ SIU”. They learned about oral health, brain functions, bone connection, and finger splint in 4 breakout sessions. At the Pharmacology Department, students gained introductory knowledge about the function of each parts of the brain, and the development of the teen brain through a PowerPoint presentation.
