Young researchers at Southern Illinois University School of M edicine show great promise as they pursued answers to scientific queries during the 28th annual Trainee Research Symposium held recently at the medical school. The two-day symposium on April 18 and 26 offered trainees in Springfield and Carbondale an opportunity to gain experience in making formal presentations of their research findings. The SIU SOM Oustanding Scholar award was presented to Laurent Brard, MD, PhD, a professor in the Department of OB/GYN. Dr. Brard is currently the PI on an NIH/NCI grant addressing rural cancer health disparities, a partnership grant with Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition, he has more than 80 publications in peer reviewed journals; almost half of those since joining SIU in 2010.
