Interdisciplinary Rotations

Illinois Map w/Springfield and Carbondale

The Interdisciplinary Rotation is designed for students who have not decided which field of study they want to pursue for their graduate degree. This option allows high-achieving students the opportunity to explore multiple areas of research before choosing a Concentration to purse a thesis MS or PhD degree.  In the application, students can select the Carbondale campus for the Anatomy & Neurobiology; Biochemistry & Molecular Biology; Microbiology and Molecular & Integrative Physiology Concentrations or the Springfield campus for the Cell Biology, Immunology & Cancer Biology and Pharmacology & Neuroscience Concentrations.

Students admitted as interdisciplinary will complete three rotations with participating faculty from any of the Concentrations on their respective campus.

The curriculum in the first semester of study will include:

  • MBBS 500: Introduction to Scientific Communication
  • MBBS 502: Research Experience through Laboratory Rotations
  • MBBS 504: Fundamentals of Graduate Research
  • Along with 1-3 elective courses

Students should declare their chosen Concentrations before the second semester of study.
