Family physicians in nine Illinois communities are hosting students from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine November 21 – December 16. The students are participating in the school’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program. The experience provides an opportunity for students to use their medical knowledge in an office setting under the supervision of an experienced physician. High School Students Get Preview of Medical School Training

Preparatory program begins eighth year Research indicates a potential physician shortage could occur in the U.S. within the next decade. A proactive preparatory program in Springfield aims to combat that trend by boosting interest in medicine during the high school years. Jan Rakinic, MD, FACS , SIU School of Medicine Professor of Surgery, has been named the president-elect for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS.) “To earn this recognition from a number of my peers, whom I have a lot of respect for, is really humbling,” says Rakinic, who joined SIU in 2001. She is the chief of the Section of Colorectal Surgery at SIU School of Medicine.
