Our Story

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine was founded in 1970 with four areas of excellence: medical education, patient care, research and community service. Caring for the communities of central and southern Illinois is SIU Medicine’s mission, and the School of Medicine aims to improve the health of residents across its 66 county service region. In 2016, SIU Medicine launched the Office of Population Science and Policy to advance its social mission and find innovative solutions to improve health beyond the confines of the hospital and clinical walls. The Research Communique

The Research Communique is a quarterly electronic newsletter put together on behalf of the Associate Dean for Research Office. The newsletter focuses on research, news and events from the research offices and research core at the SIU School of Medicine. The newsletter comes out in February, May, August and November each year. Illinois Asthma Home Assessments

Background: The Community Health Needs Assessment identified pediatric asthma as a problem disproportionally impacting children on the East side of Springfield. A community based approach using community health workers and home visits was developed to reduce Emergency Room visits due to uncontrolled asthma. Justin Darcy, a PhD student in the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology, has been selected for a postdoctoral slot on Joslin Diabetes Center's NIH Training Grant. According to Dr. T. Keith Blackwell, Associate Research Director at the Center, "...this is a prestigious award, designed to recognize fellows with an important project and with high potential for future impact in the fields of diabetes or endocrinology."
