Opioid Conference Offers Guidance For Health Care, Law Enforcement Professionals

The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic. Opioids (including prescription opioids and heroin) killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription pain reliever. More Illinoisans die from opioid drug overdoses than from motor vehicle accidents or all gun-related causes. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine honored several faculty members and students during its 2017 commencement on Saturday, May 20, at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Assistant Professor, Sabha Ganai, MD, PhD , director of gastrointestinal oncology at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU received the 2017 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, presented by the Arnold P.
