Institute for Plastic Surgery Welcomes New Chief

SIU Medicine welcomes Reuben A. Bueno Jr., MD , as chief of the Institute for Plastic Surgery. Bueno, board certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery, joins Drs. Berry , Calder , Cochran , Mailey , Neumeister , and Sommer at the Institute for Plastic Surgery. He returns to SIU after four years at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he served as the interim chair of plastic surgery, chief of pediatric plastic surgery, and director of the plastic surgery residency training program. SIU Medicine Earns National Award for Patient Access, Referral Management

In May 2018, the Patient Access Collaborative, formerly the Patient Access Symposium, recognized SIU Medicine with the award "Best Practice in Patient Access for Referral Management." The Patient Access Collaborative, founded in 2011, provides a forum for large academic health systems to discuss solutions, disseminate ideas and collaborate as a collective group to improve patient access in a complex ambulatory enterprise. Simmons Cancer Institute to Host HPV Roundtable for Parents

Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine will host “The ABC’s of HPV” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21. The roundtable discussion will provide parents and guardians with an opportunity to discuss human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations with medical professionals from Southern Illinois University Medicine. 2018 Department of Pharmacology Memorial Award Recipients

Dr. Satu Somani was one of the original faculty members of the SIU-SOM Department of Pharmacology and a dedicated scientist educator. He loved teaching, often asking for more time to teach additional material he felt important to the student’s medical education. Dr. Somani passed suddenly in 2002. To honor Dr. Somani’s memory, a fund was setup by Mrs. Somani to enable the Department of Pharmacology to annually award an outstanding student of Medical Pharmacology a monetary stipend.
